St Gerard’s Senior hockey team have won the South Leinster league cup for the second year in a row beating a strong Holy Child Side.
St Gerard’s started the better team and with some sharp passing and clever marking of their opposite numbers they applied the pressure and after 20 min went 1-0 up from a lovely strike by Toria Moynaham. On the stroke of half time Holy Child had a short corner to tie the score but the Gerard’s defence held strong and the teams turned with Gerard’s holding a valuable 1-0 lead.
It wasn’t for long though, for 10 minutes into the second half a magnificent strike by Holy Child saw the sides level. But Gerard’s weren’t going to lie down and were soon back ahead with a lovely goal from one of the schools many up and coming stars Bryony Biggam. Holy Child fought back and again the match was levelled with 5 minutes to go and it was on to extra time. St Gerard’s carried on where they left off piling on the pressure but it wasn’t until 4 minutes to go that fittingly enough Captain Haley Mulcahy drilled home a shot from the edge of the “D” to seal a very well deserved and hard fought victory.
Congratulations to all the girls and coaching staff who must be delighted how this team has developed and progressed through out the year under new coach Brendon Carolan. There has been an incredible growth in the skills and talent within the school due in no small part to Sarah Scott’s dedication as head of sport in nurturing and mentoring the schools investment in game and her team of coaches.
With four more finals this week the trophy cabinet is beginning to feel the strain!!!!!!
